Building Livable Cities 2010

Introduction

Indian cities are increasingly becoming worse places to live in. Our cities are today marked with rising pollution, dwindling green spaces, dearth of basic amenities & services, shortage of affordable housing and a complete decay of public spaces and infrastructure.

‘Building Livable Cities’ is a multi-city investigation on ideas that can make Indian cities livable. The theme of Building Livable Cities 2010 is “EcoCities – Driving India towards the Age of Sustainability”, which will explore strategies that can make Indian cities environmentally sustainable. Today, cities occupy about 2% of the world’s surface area and have a disproportionately large impact on the earth’s ecology. According to the United Nations, cities are responsible for 75% of global energy consumption and 80% of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, a large part of the solution towards solving the crisis of Climate Change lies in solving the crisis of Cities.

The half-day symposiums will be held in 5 Indian cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Bangalore) and will focus on the following areas:
  • Background and current state of urban affairs
  • Policy gaps and challenges that deter sustainability
  • Roadmaps for overcoming the biggest barriers to sustainability

About the Organizers

The Urban Vision is a think-do tank that focuses on solutions driven research; advocates best practices in policy and design; facilitates public dialogue on policy choices. The Urban Vision has been initiated with the core belief that cities offer a remarkable way to create a socially inclusive, environmentally sustainable and economically thriving society. The Urban Vision profiles best practices and the finest thinking in the key components of city building – urban design, architecture, infrastructure planning, and policy strategies. The Urban Vision illustrates inspiring concepts that urban practitioners can take on to drive the world in the right path. It is also a platform for dialogue, allowing the practitioners, policymakers and city-dwellers to share their views and develop strategies to build sustainable cities.
