About CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development
The CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development is an institution that creates a conducive, enabling climate for Indian businesses to pursue sustainability goals. It creates awareness, promotes thought leadership and builds capacity to achieve sustainability across a broad spectrum of issues.
A pioneering effort by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Centre is the fountainhead of ideas and practices to promote Sustainability. It enables Indian businesses become sustainable, and channels the potential of Indian industry to power India’s agenda for inclusive growth and sustainable development. It enables businesses transform themselves by embedding the concerns of sustainable development into their own strategies and processes.
Introduction
Climate change is one of the most significant emerging risks facing the world today, presenting tremendous challenges to the environment, to the world economy, and to individual businesses. It is also one of the most difficult risks to mitigate.
In a developing country like India, climate change could represent an additional stress on ecological and socio-economic systems that are already facing tremendous pressures due to rapid urbanization, industrialization and economic development. With its huge and growing population, a 7500-km long densely populated and low-lying coastline, and an economy that is closely tied to its natural resource base, India is considerably vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
Indian industry has played a leading role in fuelling India’s economic development resulting in a growth rate of 7-8%. While the business world acknowledges the challenges of climate change, it needs to assess its preparedness and respond accordingly. The National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) provides a framework for industry to shape its active response along with the creation of business opportunities.
While countries, companies and communities continue to grapple with re-thinking strategies, the imperative going forward will be to “connect the dots” in order to catalyze solutions for the long term. It is with this background that the CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development and CII Rajasthan State Office are organizing the National Conference on Business Action on Climate Change.
Objectives
The objective of the programme is to –
- provide a platform to Indian industry to deliberate on the mitigation strategies and technologies across various sectors;
- integration of the government policies and plans;
- identify short-term and long-term actions to be taken for mitigation and adaptation; and
- recognize, build and strengthen partnerships – with the government, among businesses, involving civil society – to implement solutions.
Program Content
The National Conference on Business Action on Climate Change will focus on following significant issues concerning Climate Change:
- Climate change challenges facing the businesses
- Mitigation strategies & technologies
- Business response
Participants can expect to achieve improved understanding of issues and policies, learn about good practices, and establish better linkages with industry peers, government and civil society, all of which may lead to improved public-private partnerships. Consequently, the conference will serve as an effective platform to enable the transformation from a “business-as-usual” scenario to progressing towards a low-carbon, sustainable economy.
Who Should Attend
Thought leaders from various sectors of the Indian industry and the government, policy makers, regulators, project implementation agencies, multilateral agencies, civil society and representatives from media are expected to attend the Conference.
