Course Details

The concept of sustainable development (SD) received an initial kick-start from the Brundtland Commission. It gathered momentum at the Rio Summit through its ‘Agenda 21’ in 1992. The SD interweaves the environment, economy and society, and as a process aims to save the crucial natural resources from being exhausted. The strictest definition of sustainability would allow no ‘substitution’ and would leave us to a situation where we leave the natural resources completely intact for our future generations. Thus, teaching a course on ‘integrated approach towards SD’ is a challenge. It calls for covering a wide spectrum of topics and integrating them to help in understanding and developing objective policies that maximize human welfare. The learning curve for developing an understanding of SD is as an unending process, which clearly cannot be defined by straight jacketed goals. We can, however, move forward by an approach to create change. The necessity for change can be diagnosed by tracing trends and going through a learning process regarding the system under study and its environment.

The course aspires to offer knowledge skills to incorporate sustainability concerned in policy/managerial decisions utilizing systematic approaches. The course covers environmental systems, natural resources and management principles, business and sustainability, economic reasoning and sustainable development practices.
