Corporate Sustainability: Bombardier Transportation Releases its 2010 Sustainability Report

Bombardier ZEFIRO 380

As a global leader in rail technology, Bombardier Transportation continues to shape the future of mobility. With the publication of its fourth bi-annual Sustainability Report, the company showcases its 2009/2010 sustainability achievements and sets a standard for the industry.

Bombardier Transportation’s operations reduced its environmental footprint during the year by 13% for water consumption, 7% for greenhouse gas emissions and 5% for energy consumption. This builds on a successful past six years that have seen the environmental footprint shrink by approximately one third in terms of water consumption (37%), greenhouse gas emissions (32%) and energy consumption (31%). Bombardier Transportation has also stabilized its accident frequency to a world class level with only 0.4 lost-time accidents per 200,000 hours worked.

To shape the future of mobility, Bombardier Transportation invested an unprecedented $ 147 million US (111 million euro) in research and development towards product innovation. It was also the first company in the rail industry to involve internet users in the future design of trains with its popular contest “YouRail – Visions of Modern Transportation”

“Last year, we launched what is arguably the most exciting example of how our approach contributes to sustainability: the BOMBARDIER ZEFIRO 380 very high speed train,” said André Navarri, President and COO, Bombardier Transportation. “This newest member of our ZEFIRO family will set new standards in all-round environmental and operating performance, passenger comfort and sustainable mobility. It is just one of the reasons we continue to say: The Climate is Right for Trains.”

In preparing this report, Bombardier Transportation applied the Global Reporting Initiative Sustainability Reporting Guidelines (GRI G3). GRI is a multi-stakeholder governed institution that provides global standards in sustainability reporting and is a collaborating centre of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

“As you can read in the report, our efforts and achievements continue to trend in a positive direction. Despite a significant increase in business volume, Bombardier Transportation reduced energy usage, water usage, emitted less greenhouse gases and produced less waste. We have set a new target of achieving a carbon-neutral manufacturing footprint by 2020,” Mr. Navarri concluded.

The Bombardier Transportation Sustainability Report is one component of the overall commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) defined by Bombardier Inc.
